Harmonic Minor Scale Formula

The harmonic minor scale is created by raising the seventh note of the natural minor scale by a half step. The formula is:

W - H - W - W - H - W+H - H

Where:

  • W = Whole step
  • H = Half step
  • W+H = Whole and a Half step (3 semitones)

For example, in the key of A:

  • A - B - C - D - E - F - G# - A

Harmonic Major Scale Formula

The harmonic major scale is derived from the major scale by lowering the sixth note by a half step. The formula is:

W - W - H - W - H - W+H - H

For example, in the key of C:

  • C - D - E - F - G - Ab - B - C
